Modern Spanish Master Bathroom

Modern Spanish Master Bathroom

So if you follow me on Instagram , about a year ago you may remember seeing that the master shower flooded through the ceiling into the family room below. The shower renovation was completed months ago, but due to some personal circumstances, I haven't shared the updates yet. Well guess what, my friends? Today is the day I'm going to share the reveal of the updated Spanish Coastal Master Bathroom!

Before

Although the shower flood of course came as a huge (and messy) surprise, it turned into a great opportunity to partially update the master bathroom. The bathroom is separated into two areas: the sink, vanity, and one closet are in an area that is open to the bedroom, and the shower and toilet are in a small room off of that. It would be awesome to one day update the vanity and add a second sink, but since this project was definitely unplanned, the budget was limited.

The existing 1987 builder-grade shower had definitely seen its day, and was nothing special to look at from the beginning. It was about as simple as could be – basic white square tiles, a plastic shower pan, and simple fixtures. The walls and ceiling were painted an adobe color that certainly didn't do anything to help the small size of the room. I didn't have a chance to take any photos before some of the demo began, but here are a couple phone photos to give you an idea of what it looked like:

Pretty ugly, right? At this stage the shower pan, broken plumbing, and damaged floor had already been removed, and the toilet had been detached and moved. It normally sits in the corner to the right of the shower head.

Design

We were told that the insurance company would cover the cost of replacing the shower essentially as it was, but nothing beyond that. So, we decided that it would be worth some extra expense to add a few upgrades. Design elements we knew we wanted to incorporate were:

  • A tiled shower floor instead of a plastic shower pan
  • Floor to ceiling wall tiles
  • An accent wall
  • A shampoo niche
  • Upgraded fixtures
  • A taller shower door

In terms of style, we wanted to go with a modern Spanish look. The existing floor in the bathroom was travertine, so we needed to choose tiles that would work with that. For the floor tile I wanted to use pebble tiles to add a coastal element, and we decided to use white subway tiles on the side and rear walls to keep things light. I came up with a few different design options for the accent wall, which I also shared on Instagram:

After visiting a few local tile shops and playing around with several samples, we chose a design similar to Option 3. The construction took a couple of months, but it turned out AMAZING. Keep scrolling for the full reveal!

After

Here it is now! (The room is only about 6ft x 6ft, so it's tricky to photograph.) I'm sooo happy with our tile choices, and I think it fits the California Spanish Coastal vibe just perfectly! What do you think? Let me know in the comments below! A materials and source list is included after the photos.
